as jack benny used to say,
"i'm thinking, i'm thinking ...."
A coalition of advocacy groups is objecting to 4parents.gov, the government-funded (that is to say, you-funded) website that promotes abstinence as the dominant form of sex education. It's even worse than tthey're saying: A quick glance of the website soon leads you to a condom quiz that is all about how they don't work. In the age of AIDS, your tax dollars are being used to discourage condom use. What the advocacy groups also failed to mention is that the first recommendation the website makes for avoiding teenaged depression is ... going to church. Yeah, that's gonna cheer up the little Goth in your life, isn't it?
Here are the questions in the "Condom Quiz":
1. Condoms, when used consistently and correctly, provide complete protection from all sexually transmitted diseases. True or False?
2. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), how many steps are involved in correct condom use?
a. At least 7
b. At least 5
c. At least 2
d. There is more than one step?
3. Condoms offer equal protection from pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. True or False?
4. All condoms are made of latex. True or False?
5. Reasons condoms fail include:
a. They leak or break during use.
b. They slip or fall off during use.
c. They are put on or removed incorrectly.
d. All of the above.

The section on "Depression - Protective Measures" begins as follows:
"The following activities may help people avoid depression: Become involved in church, civic or community groups ..."
Not only are they pushing religion as the first option for fighting depression, but The Christian Right no longer needs to even pretend we are an ecumenical state. They don't even bother writing "house of worship" or "church, temple, or mosque" -- it's "church" and that's it. You Jews and Muslims and the rest of you should be depressed, for Christ's sake! Who wouldn't be depressed knowing they'll be spending eternity in hell?
In a related story, a scientific study of yeast was released which explains that populations that reproduce sexually adapt more quickly and effectively to changes in their environment than those that do not. There was no information available on how regularly they attend church.
It seems to me that the people who discourage condom use should be required to have unprotected sex with either a dozen Hunts Point hookers or the same number of needle sharing junkie giggolos (as per their personal preferences.) It's not that they deserve to be punished or anything; rather, since their irresponsibility will undoubtedly contribute to the HIV infection and death of at least one person, they fully deserve to share in the risk they're urging on others. This is fucking ugly.
