Mark Foxwell

I remember a nun in Catholic school actually teaching us that someone once said "The Bible teaches us how to go to Heaven and not how the Heavens go."

OTOH I once had to write a paper in Catholic high school about my own views on evolution/creation. Well I was a science fiction fan and totally comfortable with Darwin, but I also was someone who thought Catholicism was defined by our deference to infallible statements and serious encyclicals from the Pope. So when Creationist friends of my mother's turned my attention to some encyclical from the early 20th century by one of the Leos, I felt compelled to accept its demand that all Catholics believe we were descended from one pair of human beings. I came up with some goofy theory about God elevating a couple of hominids to full humanity and assuming the descendents of these two married hominind mates and thus sort of blended the divine spark into the evolved mix. It was a terrible bit of bad faith on my part and I got a bad grade too.

Virginia in the early 1980s sucked so bad that moving to the Redneck Riviera, Panama City Florida, was an intellectual and moral step up for me. Going to public high school helped too. It was a far more meaningfully Christian place than creepy Peninsula Catholic High in Newport News, let me tell you. I gave up the apeman Adam theory pretty quick, Pope Leo or none.
