For (frightening) insight into what the world is up against in the Middle East, I recommend "The Road to Martyr's Square." It's a highly readable account of two Westerners who lived among the Palestinians for many years, collecting pop culture artifacts and personal stories as they watched the culture absorb suicide bombing - not just as ideology, but as a cultural and personal philosophy of transformation.
It's that much more effective because it's based on compassion and listening. The conclusion I drew? That, for a variety of reasons, the culture of martyrdom is so deeply embedded it will take generations to remove. This book is gripping and significant.
