RJ,
While I have real problem with the militarization of space, I am gonna defend IN PRINCEPLE, the argument that that we need privatization of space. I say in principle because, if done well, would allow things like launch costs to come down, and come down dramatically. Of course, the flip side is, you need legitmate oversight so that you don't get thing like Halliburtan and KBR. Obviously this is something this administration has no intention of providing, and so their "privatization" plan is method to provide kick-backs to the Military Industrial complex.

But, well done commerical enterprizes in space, that creates need for private spacecrafts, and similiar things, will encourage space colonization, which is what is the real purpose of any endevour in space needs to be about. That is why the idea of limiting manned spaceflight could be bad. It partly depends on what we want Nasa to be - if what we want is just another science department, then it really doesn't matter if nasa encourages commercialization and privatization. On the other hand, if what we want is colonization (and I believe that is not only what we want, but what we need) then we need to encourage commercialization and privatization.
