I view the willingness to torture as a test for whether or not we should be at war. That is, if we're not willing to torture an enemy, why would we still be willing to bomb, shoot, burn, starve, and poison them? In a legitimate war, torture is also legitimate. The question is whether or not the war is legitimate, and an unwillingness to torture an enemy to obtain tactical information by which to destroy them is pretty solid evidence that the war is not legitimate.
