I really enjoyed this article. Exposing the superficiality of the differences between a beatnik/hippie and a straight politician. Both Allen Ginsberg and Senator Ted Kennedy had the vision of curing social ills and making America a better place.

In a way, Senator Kennedy was both a Solon and Bodhisattvic exercise. He could have succumed to his "demons" of alchohol, chasing women, being crushed under the legacy of his older brothers. Instead, with the help of his second wife Vicki, he pulled himself back from the brink and went on to lead and mentor another generation of politicians and other community leaders.

Wikipedia describes Solon by saying his "reforms failed in the short term yet he is often credited with having laid the foundations for Athenian democracy." Although Senator Kennedy accomplished a lot before he left us last week, one of his biggest ambitions, health care reform is still left undone. Who's to say how things will turn out?
